Word from the President

Dear Friend,

Sometimes I receive a note that is not only hard to describe, but in some ways implausible. I think you might be interested in reading it.

Dear Mr. Stromberg,

The last couple of months have been so lonely.

Most of the year things go great for me. I enjoy what I do. I?m faithful, never late and am always available. I never complain though I take a lot of abuse. I get moved around a lot, have to carry more than my weight every day, and have tattoo-like battle scars to show for it. (By the way, what does "Kilroy was Here" mean?) Yet it's great being part of a support team of thousands though you can't really tell us apart. But for two months the days were lonely and I felt like nobody was ever going to need me again.

But then just a couple of weeks ago, things changed! Once again there was a bustle of activity. Overnight, the loneliness disappeared and I knew I was important.

Throughout the day, my favorite time is Bible history. Not only am I treated better, but I don't get as many oily face prints from bored students!

So, thank you for giving me purpose in life.

OK, so I made up the letter. But there is truth to it. For many students, Bible history is their favorite time of the day.

  • Last year, almost 4,800 students elected Bible history courses. Enrollment was up at almost every school. We are anticipating as many students again this year.
  • Two new teachers were hired. Mr. David Adels is teaching at Ooltewah Middle School and Mr. John Perkins is at Brown Middle School.
  • Volunteers from two communities are working to raise funds so that next year their schools will be able to offer Bible history courses. These communities are Sale Creek and Signal Mountain.
  • In addition, another six school principals want to begin offering Bible history at their schools, or expand it to a full time offering.
  • Our financial year ends on July 31. Because of the faithfulness of so many people, we ended the last school year with all obligations met. To be honest with you, I wasn't sure we would make it. It was that close.

I want to share two parent comments that were expressed to me the other day.

Thank you for teaching these children the most important subject that could ever be taught.
Thank you to whomever that allows our children the opportunity to learn Bible history.

Who is whomever? Our donors are the ones that give these children the opportunity to learn Bible history.

So, besides giving a lonely desk purpose, it's great to know that for the 86th consecutive year, thousands of students will be studying the Bible legally and for-credit in our Hamilton County public schools at no cost to the school system.

Gratefully yours,

Doug Stromberg?
